Project Priscilla
Thanks to detailed record-keeping and research, Thomalind Martin Polite of Charlestown, South Carolina learned she is the 7th generation descendant of a young girl taken from Sierra Leone and sold into slavery in 1868. The 10 year-old girl was given the name ‘Priscilla’ by her captors. Click here to learn of this extraordinary story, which includes Thomalind’s 2005 journey to Sierra Leone, and her visit to Newport, Rhode Island, where the slave ship Hare departed for Sierra Leone.
